In November 2023, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will be implemented in Europe’s visa regime. Once completely implemented, ETIAS for Romania will be a required step for many international tourists.
The new travel authorization is intended to assist enhance border procedures in the Schengen Area. Before entering the borderless zone, the system will examine international visitors and authorise their trip.
Although Romania has yet to become an official Schengen member, the ETIAS system will continue to be used in its immigration policies.

ROMANIA GENERAL INFORMATION
With about 20 million people, Romania is the sixth most populous country in the European Union. The country is the 12th biggest in Europe, with a land size of 92,046 square miles (238,397 square kilometres).
Romania is bordered by the following countries:
- Bulgaria (to the south)
- Ukraine (to the north)
- Hungary (to the west)
- Serbia (to the southwest)
- Moldova (to the east)
Bucharest, Romania’s capital and largest city, is also the country’s largest city. Iași, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Constanța, Craiova, Brașov, and Galaţi are also important cities.
Romania has a moderate and continental climate with four distinct seasons and occasional geographical variations.
The national language is Romanian, which has its own official festival, Romania Language Day, which is observed every year on August 31.
ROMANIA: THE EUROPEAN UNION AND SCHENGEN AREA
Romania joined the European Union in January 2007, and the country now accounts for 3.9% of the EU’s total population. Romania has 32 members in the European Parliament.
The country continues to use its own currency, the Romanian Leu, but has pledged to switching to the euro once it passes all eurozone standards.
Despite its EU membership, Romania is not currently a member of the Schengen zone. This is set to change in the near future, since Romania is in the process of entering the Schengen Area.
Romania, like the other Schengen Area countries, will follow the ETIAS policy. This implies that even if the nation has not yet completely entered the travel zone when the new authorization is established, it will still be required.
VISA REQUIREMENTS FOR ROMANIA
Romania’s Europe visa rules are based on the Schengen accord, as the country is set to join soon. This implies it is part of the borderless travel zone, which allows EU nationals to travel visa-free to Romania and all other Schengen countries.
Non-EU passport holders do not enjoy freedom of movement; they must enter the Schengen Area with a valid visa or visa waiver.
DO I NEED ETIAS FOR ROMANIA?
The ETIAS for Romania will be applicable to all visa-free nationals. Citizens of these countries will continue to be able to travel without a visa as long as they apply for the ETIAS Romania beforehand.
It is critical to understand that ETIAS is not a visa. The new system is a visa waiver system that will assess visitors and authorise them for visa-free access into the Schengen zone.
Citizens of non-visa-exempt nations must still apply for a visa. Only qualifying nationalities are eligible for the ETIAS.
DO I NEED A VISA FOR ROMANIA?
The entry criteria for Romania are determined on the visitor’s nationality and the passport they use to travel.
Certain nations have visa-free access to Romania. Citizens of these countries can enter Romania without a visa and remain for up to three months. Travel must be for either work or pleasure.
Visa-exempt visitors who intend to stay in Romania for more than three months, work, or study must apply for a visa.
Passport holders who do not qualify for visa-free entry must get a visa for Romania before travelling. The visa policy of Romania accepts Schengen visas.
TRAVELLING TO ROMANIA WITH ETIAS
Traveling to Romania with an ETIAS authorization will be simple. The visa waiver is connected to the passenger’s passport electronically. They will just need to submit their passport, which will be scanned and authorised, at immigration.
The ETIAS for Romania will be valid for up to 90 days and must be used within a 180-day period.
The ETIAS is a three-year multiple-entry travel permit. Holders can enter Romania and all other Schengen countries several times with the same authorization.

DO I NEED MEDICAL INSURANCE FOR ROMANIA?
European Union passport holders are entitled to free healthcare in Romania. They must be in possession of their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
Non-EU visitors’ healthcare needs vary depending on whether they hold an ETIAS or a Schengen visa.
HEALTH INSURANCE FOR ROMANIA ETIAS
Medical insurance is not required for ETIAS holders, although it is usually preferable to travel with enough healthcare coverage to avoid any unexpected complications.
MEDICAL INSURANCE FOR SCHENGEN VISA FOR ROMANIA
Travelers with a Schengen visa must have proper health insurance. This is a requirement of the Schengen visa policy—applicants cannot receive the visa unless they have medical coverage.
The health insurance must be active for the whole period of the trip and must cover at least 30.000€.
EUROPE’S VISA WAIVER FOR ROMANIA
From November 2023, all visa waiver travellers will be able to use the ETIAS visa waiver for Romania.
The ETIAS application process is entirely online. It is not essential to physically visit an embassy or consulate.
To complete the online application form, eligible persons will just need to supply some basic information. This will just take a few minutes, and ETIAS clearance is typically expedited.
