The European Commission proposed the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) in April 2016 and it was approved in November 2016. ETIAS is similar to other visa waiver programmes, such as the well-known US ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization). ETIAS is expected to begin operations in November 2023.

The European Parliament gave its final approval to the ETIAS system on July 5, 2018. This new travel and information authorisation system, developed by Eu-LISA, will cross-check passenger information against a number of security databases, including Europol, Interpol, the Schengen Information System, Eurodac, and the Visa Information System.

The European Union will be able to evaluate the eligibility of nationals from visa waiver countries or ETIAS eligible nations via the ETIAS Europe application system. Before travelling to Europe, applicants must complete an ETIAS registration, and the information given will be pre-screened for security, health, and migration issues.

THE ETIAS VISA WAIVER FORM FOR EUROPE

The ETIAS application form will be accessed through a quick and easy online method. In the great majority of circumstances, authorization will be granted within minutes. Online registration and application should take no more than 10 minutes per applicant.

According to the experience of other nations with similar travel authorization systems (the United States, Canada, and Australia), an estimated 95% of applications will be accepted within minutes. Fingerprints and other biometric information will not be gathered.

The ETIAS travel authorization will be provided and valid for three years after the registration and application procedure is completed.

VISA-EXEMPT TRAVELLERS NEED TO COMPLETE THE ETIAS APPLICATION FORM

ETIAS is not a visa, it is an electronic travel authorisation, also known as a visa waiver.

Non-EU citizens from visa-waiver countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States will need to apply.

Visitors from visa-exempt countries will need to receive ETIAS authorisation to cross an external Schengen border.

International carriers (airlines, coaches, and sea carriers) will verify passengers hold a valid ETIAS before boarding. It will also be checked at the external Schengen border.

With ETIAS, eligible travellers can visit the Schengen Area for up to 90 days per 180-day period for tourism and business activities. To stay for longer than 3 months, or for non-tourism or business purposes, a visa application must be submitted.

DO BRITISH CITIZENS NEED TO COMPLETE THE ETIAS APPLICATION FORM?

Since Brexit, British passport holders have become non-EU nationals and must apply for ETIAS in order to travel any of the Schengen member nations where it is necessary.

QUESTIONS ON THE ETIAS APPLICATION FORM

The EU application form, like other visa exemptions, like the US ESTA system, will require all qualified applicants to supply personal information such as full name, date of birth, contact information, and passport information.

When applying for an ETIAS, applicants from visa-waiver nations must give the following information:

• Current address
• Parents’ information
• Passport and other nationality details

ETIAS APPLICATION FORM SECURITY QUESTIONS

The passenger will have 96 hours to supply it, and the Schengen member country’s national authority will have four weeks to make a judgement. The applicant has the right to appeal if his or her application is denied.

The ETIAS visa waiver will have a fee that must be paid in order for the application to be submitted. The ETIAS application cannot be handled unless the payment is completed.

The final step in the registration procedure is to pay the ETIAS charge. The application will be completed after the fee is paid using a debit or credit card. The ETIAS system will analyse the application, and the applicant will be notified via email if it is accepted.
