VISA WAIVER BILATERAL AGREEMENTS BETWEEN THE US AND EU MEMBER STATES
Citizens of the United States of America can benefit from bilateral visa-waiver arrangements with numerous European Union nations. These procedures allow US passport holders to extend their stay beyond the 90-day Schengen restriction.
The Schengen Area countries that have bilateral visa-waiver reciprocal agreements with the United States are listed below, along with the maximum allowed duration of stay in each case:
- Belgium (3 months)
- Denmark (3 months)
- Italy (3 months)
- Hungary (90 days)*
- Portugal (60 days)*
- Spain (90 days)*
- France (90 days)
- Latvia (90 days in half a year)*
- The Netherlands (90 days)*
Country holding a bilateral agreement with Schengen:
- Norway (90 days)
*Only regular passports are accepted.
US passport holders who use one of these bilateral visa waiver arrangements must depart the Schengen Area from that EU countries. It is required to fly straight to a third nation or pass via a non-Schengen airport while departing.
Furthermore, US visitors are obliged to stay in that specific EU Member State. The bilateral accords make it impossible to travel freely throughout Europe. Instead, they will require an ETIAS.
Bilateral agreements between the United States and members of the European Union are susceptible to revision.
Travelers from the United States visiting Europe will soon need to apply for an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System), the new travel authorization for Europe that will go into force in November 2023. ETIAS will aid in border management and security.
This implies that beginning in November 2023, Americans travelling to a Schengen-zone countries in Europe will be allowed to apply for ETIAS. The Schengen Area is made up of European Union members such as France, Italy, Germany, Sweden, and Spain, as well as four non-EU members: Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. During its validity, ETIAS will allow visa-free travel to all Schengen countries for short stays.
HOW LONG CAN A US CITIZEN STAY IN EUROPE?
Citizens of the United States can visit the Schengen Area without a visa for up to 90 days. Visa-exempt non-EU nationals, including Americans, will be allowed to register with ETIAS before departure beginning in November 2023.
The ETIAS is not a visa for US citizens. ETIAS is a visa waiver programme that allows travellers to enter the Schengen Area without a visa. Americans will still be able to visit Europe without a visa, but they must register online with ETIAS.
The ETIAS visa waiver for Americans is a three-year multiple-entry travel authorization. During the 3-year validity period of the ETIAS for US travellers, they can enter any of the Schengen zone European nations that apply for the travel authorization as many times as they need to.
Each ETIAS admission allows for a cumulative stay of 90 days in a Schengen nation during a 180-day period. ETIAS allows short-term visits to Schengen nations for vacation, business, medical treatment, or transit. To stay for extended lengths of time or for other reasons, American citizens must apply for a visa at an embassy or consulate.
Currently, there are 22 European countries that form part of the Schengen Area:
- EU Schengen
- Non-EU Schengen States
- Non-Schengen EU States
Non-Schengen EU States
Non-EU Member States:

TRAVELLING TO EUROPE FROM THE US WITH ETIAS
From November 2023, all US residents, including kids, will be required to get an ETIAS in order to travel to Europe visa-free. All U.S. minors under the age of 18 must complete a separate visa waiver for Europe application. Although parents or legal guardians can apply for a European visa waiver on behalf of a minor, each kid must have an individual approved ETIAS.
It is also crucial to remember that an authorised ETIAS for American citizens does not ensure entrance into Europe: rather, it only allows the holder to travel to Schengen nations. An immigration officer at Schengen border control will make the final decision on entrance. The traveller may be required to demonstrate that they do not intend to spend more time in Europe than is permitted under ETIAS by presenting evidence of:
- Return flight tickets to the United States or tickets to an onward destination
- Proof of travel health insurance
- Proof of sufficient funds to cover the stay
Other rules and limitations to be aware of while travelling to Europe from the United States include the right to carry firearms, the import and export of significant quantities of tobacco, alcohol, or perfume, and the declaration of large sums of money.
Finally, an ETIAS may be cancelled if the requirements for awarding the visa waiver for Europe are no longer satisfied, particularly if there is cause to assume that the visa waiver for Europe was acquired by giving false or fraudulent information. As a result, it is critical to double-check that all of the information on the ETIAS form is correct before submitting the application, as even minor errors can result in the cancellation of an ETIAS.
Travellers whose passport expires during the duration of the ETIAS must additionally apply for a new Europe visa waiver from the US in order to continue travelling to the Schengen Area, since an ETIAS is explicitly connected to the travel document used to complete the initial application.
DO AMERICAN CITIZENS NEED A VISA FOR EUROPE (SCHENGEN VISA)?
Because the United States is a visa-exempt country for Europe, American citizens do not need a visa to enter the Schengen Area for up to 90 days. Americans will be needed to acquire a visa waiver to remain in Schengen nations for fewer than 90 days beginning in November 2023. There is no need to apply before each trip because ETIAS allows travel to all Schengen countries during its three-year validity period. ETIAS is a visa waiver, sometimes known as a travel authorization, rather than a visa.
American citizens who wish to stay in Europe for extended lengths of time or for purposes other than those authorised under ETIAS must apply for a visa. Visas for Europe are given on an individual basis and can be single-entry, double-entry, or multiple-entry. Applicants must apply in person at an embassy or consulate of the nation they intend to visit in the United States.
WHAT DO AMERICANS NEED TO GO TO EUROPE?
Americans will need a valid passport, a credit or debit card to pay the ETIAS charge, and an email account to acquire the Europe visa waiver. These are the primary ETIAS requirements for US residents that each candidate must meet when applying. Applicants who do not have the proper travel documentation may have their application refused.
When applying for an ETIAS, applicants must guarantee that their passport is valid for three months beyond the length of their anticipated stay. Passports older than ten years may not be regarded as a legitimate travel document.
Applicants who have dual nationality and hence several passports should use the same passport to submit the ETIAS application that they would use to go to the Schengen Area, as the ETIAS will be electronically linked to an individual passport.
When applying for an electronic visa waiver for Europe, you must include a current email address where you will get the approved ETIAS. Because an authorised ETIAS is electronically connected to the traveller’s passport, it will not be necessary to print a copy of the visa waiver; nonetheless, travellers are encouraged to bring a copy with them to Europe in case the electronic system fails.
EUROPE VISA REQUIREMENTS FOR US CITIZENS
A consular appointment for a visa is required, along with the following papers.
Visa Requirements for US Citizens in Europe:

HOW CAN AMERICANS APPLY FOR ETIAS TO VISIT EUROPE?
US citizens can apply for an ETIAS online by completing an ETIAS registration form. Enrollment will be a short and straightforward process, comparable to the ESTA for qualified people travelling to the United States, and will take around 20 minutes to complete on average. Applicants must complete out an online form with their contact information and passport information, which includes:
- Name and surname
- Nationality
- Date, place, and country of birth
- Current address
- Contact phone number
- Email address
- Passport number
- Passport issue/expiry date
This procedure enables European immigration and customs officials to pre-screen all travellers and validate their status before allowing them to enter the Schengen Area or even board a flight, detecting possible risks and strengthening security measures throughout the Schengen Area.
All information given on the Europe visa waiver application is pre-screened against databases eu-LISA’s (European Union Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice). eu-LISA is also in charge of the ETIAS system’s maintenance and will verify applications against security information databases including VIS (visa information database), SIS (shared European database to identify suspected criminals, missing individuals, and stolen assets), and EURODAC (fingerprint database).
To submit the ETIAS visa waiver application, you must also answer some basic security questions, such as:
- Criminal history
- Employment history
- Prior travel to conflict areas
- Past European travel information
After answering all of the relevant security questions on the ETIAS form, the requisite ETIAS fee must be paid using a valid credit or debit card. The process is complete after the travel authorization for Europe is paid, and the applicant will get the ETIAS confirmation through email. Applicants will be able to travel to Europe with a granted ETIAS visa waiver.
