Finland, a Scandinavian gem, connects Russia, Norway, Sweden, and many bodies of water in the north. Finland’s overall population was just 5.5 million people in 2017, with the bulk of those people living in the country’s southern region, which is the most wealthy region.
Officially speaking both Finnish and Swedish, despite significant disparities between the two languages, as a result of Sweden’s annexation of many parts of Finland during the period of the Swedish Empire. Finland, which gained independence from Russia following a civil war and became a presidential republic in 1919, has seen a wide range of civilizations dating back to 9000 BCE. Although there is evidence that people lived in the area around 120,000-130,000 years ago.
Finland, mostly an agricultural country, was driven into the industrial age after WWII when war reparations had to be paid to Russia and international trade began to flourish.

FINLAND BASIC INFORMATION
Finland is a Nordic country in northern Europe, formally known as the Republic of Finland.
Finland has a geographical area of 338,440 km² (130,672 square miles) and the least densely populated nation in the European Union, with a population of slightly over 5.5 million people.
Finland’s capital, Helsinki, is the most visited city in the country, although the country also has many attractive little villages and gorgeous scenery.
Finland is surrounded by two ETIAS countries:
- Sweden
- Norway
Finland also has an eastern border with Russia, as well as the Baltic Sea, the Gulf of Bothnia, and the Gulf of Finland.
Finland’s climate is characterised by harsh temperatures and lengthy winters due to its position in northern Europe.
Snow covers southern Finland for around three months of the year, and northern Finland for up to seven months. Winter in Helsinki lasts 5 months, with temperatures hovering around 0 degrees Celsius.
FINLAND AND THE EUROPEAN UNION
Finland joined the European Union on January 1, 1995, and became a member of the Eurozone four years later.
Finland has been a member of the Schengen Area since March 25, 2001, and as a result, there are no border crossings between Finland and its Schengen neighbours, Sweden and Norway.
In recent years, Finnish authorities, along with other member states, have been participating in the creation of ETIAS, a new travel authorization system for non-EU tourists. ETIAS will be deployed in November 2023 and will help make Finland an even safer tourist destination by prescreening all non-European guests.
TRAVELLING TO FINLAND: PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR TRAVELLERS TO FINLAND
Finland is a growing tourism destination, with about 7 million tourists each year. Many tourists are drawn to Finland due of its attractive natural landscapes. Because the country is relatively sparsely inhabited, it has abundance of open space and 39 national parks.
Helsinki, the capital, is the most significant city for business travellers and also has a lot to offer tourists. There are various cities outside of the city with rich, intriguing history.
The EF English Proficiency Index puts Finland ninth in the world, with a grade of’very high,’ removing the language barrier for many travellers.
The Nordic country is also seen as safe, routinely ranking high on global indices.
The EU’s visa liberalisation policy is one of the reasons why many non-European nationals visit Finland. Foreigners from outside the European Union can remain in Finland without a visa for up to 90 days. Such travellers must also apply for ETIAS. The travel authorization system will be introduced in November 2023 and will become a condition for entrance.

Tourists from other EU nations need just bring their ID while crossing the border into Finland. Citizens of neighbouring ETIAS nations, Sweden and Norway, can drive into Finland without stopping at a checkpoint. Many people also travel by ferry between the countries.
Many non-Europeans can enter Finland without a visa thanks to the EU’s visa liberalisation policy. Such travellers can now cross the border with only a valid passport; but, if fully implemented, they will additionally require an ETIAS visa waiver for Finland.
To enter Finland from a non-EU nation that is not qualified for ETIAS, travellers must provide the following documents while crossing the border:
- Passport issued in the last 10 years and valid for 3 months from the date of departure from the Schengen Area

VISITING FINLAND
Finland is well-known for being one of the greatest spots on the planet to view the Aurora Borealis. Winter is the ideal season to visit. The winter months and shorter daylight hours provide a wonderful glimpse of this natural phenomena.
However, the Northern Lights are not the only incentive to visit Finland. Finland is a popular choice for eco-tourism as well, with gorgeous landscape including green woods spanning 75% of the nation. Furthermore, Finland is renowned as “the land of a thousand lakes” since it has more lakes per capita than any other country.
Cities in Finland are also highly worth seeing. Helsinki, the capital, is a design and architecture hotspot. Helsinki is noted for its particular clean and minimalistic architectural style, and the city possesses Europe’s highest concentration of Art Nouveau structures, including the Helsinki Central Station, the National Museum, and the Jugend Hall, to mention a few.
Lapland, Finland’s northernmost area, is popular with travellers, especially around Christmas. The Midnight Sun phenomenon may be viewed in Lapland, and a visit to Santa Claus Village is sure to please the kids.
Levi in Finnish Lapland is the country’s leading ski resort, having slopes for all levels of skiers and snowboarders, from beginners to advanced. Popular ski resorts include Pyhä, Vuokatti, and Ruka.

Following the submission of the application, the traveller’s information is cross-checked against multiple international security databases, including the Schengen Information System and Europol.
When the ETIAS is accepted, it is electronically connected to the passport, and the individual is now permitted to enter Finland.
